As a parent, I find myself constantly immersed in reading, watching, and listening to all things related to parenting. It's a passion of mine. However, I've come to realise that the constant bombardment of information on what we should do as parents can be overwhelming and confusing. It's easy to get caught up in trying to do everything right at every stage of parenting, in every situation, which can prevent us from fully enjoying the sweet and silly moments with our children.
During a recent conversation with a close friend who is also a parent of two, we discussed how the pressure to perform in other areas of life often spills over into our roles as parents. It's a sentiment that many of us can relate to.
"Perhaps, instead of striving for perfection, we need to show more kindness to ourselves as humans and acknowledge that each parenting journey is unique, while still sharing common experiences with one another."
Here are some tips that have helped me, cipher through all the information available to us and to help you decide what is valuable for you and your family.
1 /
Trust yourself
It seems simple but often overlooked. Remember you know what is right for you and your family.
2 /
Expert ADVICE
If curious and feel like some advice via a podcast is landing for you. Order the experts' book or listen to them further on their platforms and see if it is the right fit, if it is, apply it.
4 /
OPEN TO LEARNING
Keep your approach to new information open but discerning, as we are in the digital age. It is easy for us all to get caught up in the 'wave' of hot topics and concerns around parenting. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it! If you are happy and your children are happy, that is enough.
3 /
A TRUSTED FriEND
A trusted friend - discussing your ideas and or concerns with a trusted friend, is a great way to filter the noise and your expectations. This is a great starting point.
5 /
COMMUNICATION
If you have a partner, discuss your concerns or questions around your children and come up with an approach together. You are so much stronger as a united team.
Parenting is a challenging role that many of us feel ill-equipped for, but I believe we are all doing our best. Thankfully, we have numerous resources at our disposal to help us along the way. It is crucial to keep educating ourselves, listening, and learning, but also remember that perfection is not attainable in parenthood.
"It is in our imperfect moments that we often learn the most valuable lessons."
