Growing up in the 80s, my childhood entertainment revolved around the trusty VCR, TV, and Nintendo console. I must have watched the Never Ending Story on repeat until the tape finally gave out! But as a parent now, I find myself facing a whole new world of technology and its impact on my own children.
With a toddler and a 5-year-old in tow, we're already seeing the different ways they interact with technology. From iPads in school to Disney movies at home, it's a balancing act to monitor screen time and ensure there are suitable boundaries around devices. Will their desire for more tech time only grow as they get older?
I've been fortunate to learn from a friend who specialises in educating families and educators on this topic. Her approach focuses on finding a healthy balance rather than succumbing to fear. It's a perspective that resonates with me as I navigate parenthood in the digital age.
As my husband and I seek advice and resources on managing tech use in our family, I'm excited to share that our upcoming ‘Around the Table’ feature will spotlight Screen Sanity. This organisation equips parents with the tools to guide their children through the digital landscape at every stage of development.
Technology isn't inherently bad, but it's crucial to consider how we utilise it and the role it plays in our children's lives. Our goal is to empower our kids to embrace technology responsibly, without letting it consume their every moment. After all, once that screen lights up, it can be hard to switch off.
Let's find that balance together.
